Wolves of the Beyond

Lone Wolf
*****
By Kathryn Lasky

What I like: The mix of magic and mundane.

Plot: A wolf mother gives birth to a deformed/malcadh/cursed pup who is taken away from her and left to die on a cliff about to tumble into a river by wolf custom that all deformed or cursed pups be left to die somewhere. The pup gets saved by a bear mother he later calls Thunderheart who has had her last cub killed by a cougar. He gets named Faolan and grows up to  be a wolf with paws in both the bear and the wolf world. He later goes out to find out what he is (he doesn't know about wolves) when Thunderheart doesn't return after going into a blizzard. There had been aftershocks after an earthquake lately.

Inheritance Series

Eragon
****

By Christopher Paolini

What I like: The adventure, drama, and magic.

Plot: A Young farm boy named Eragon finds a smooth blue rock in a treacherous mountain range known as the Spine and takes it home with a view to selling it for some money to get his adopted family some food for the winter. When he finds it isn't valuable, he keeps it. But late one night he finds he has a dragon egg! He keeps it in secret and names it Saphira. But they are forced to leave when two strangers come to his village Carvahall. They try to capture Eragon an Saphira, but fail. They (Eragon and Saphira) flee with a new ally Brom, who has quite a few secrets to reveal (maybe). Eragon gets a new sword from Brom, learns magic and starts his tutoring.

Not for kids 9-0.
The Hobbit
*****
Prelude to The Lord of the Rings series.

By J. R. R. Tolkien

What i like about this book: The fantasy, adventure, and magic.

Plot: A kindly old hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who ( apparently) has no taste for adventure is swept along on one by the wizard Gandalf and 13 dwarves (including the about-to-rise-to-power king of the dwarf race) to reclaim the dwarf mountain called the Lonely Mountain which was taken over by a greedy dragon named Smaug. And who knows? That hobbit might be the most courageous hobbit who ever lived! Or reach very close to the mantle anyways.

Oh and not for kids under 10 years of age as it is a bit scary.

Series: The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica.

Book: Here, There Be Dragons.

By  James A. Owen.
****

What I like about it: The mix of fantasy and history.

Plot: Three scholars named John, Jack, and Charles are entrusted with the mantle of Caretakers to the Imaginarium Geographica ( Imaginary Geography ), a geography to all the islands in the Archipalego of Dreams, in which there are many different items, animals, and people. The caretakers then go on a mission to save the Archipalego from the evil Winter King, in which they meet many friends and foes.

P.S. There is some violence, so I suggest waiting till you're 10 to read it.

Merlin's Dragon by T. A. Barron

The Book: Merlin's Dragon
The Author: T.A. Barron
The Publisher: Philomel Books

*****

This is the first book in the Merlin's Dragon trilogy.

What I like about this book is the great mix of magic and mundane, physical and spiritual.

There are plenty of characters and creatures too! I personally think there's going to be a spin-off.

And now for the synopsis: Basil (Basilgarrad):good.
The Wizard Merlin: good.
Spirit Lord Dagda: good.
Spirit Warlord Rhita Gawr: very evil, very bad.
The fight to save Avalon (their home):Absolutely ess-en-ti-al!

Read the series to find out more.
